In accordance with the business strategy defined by local breeder and Breeding Director/Coordinator and the Breeding Leadership Team, the Breeder I defines and executes the breeding methodology for tomato in order to create innovative and competitive varieties for assigned target markets.

The Breeder provides the company with new varieties in his/her target market segments by searching for the appropriate genetic resources and implementing the best technologies and methods available.

Main responsabilities:

• Under the direction of the  local breeder and Breeding Coordinator/Regional Breeding Director, the breeder define the breeding strategy and develop a genetic improvement program to create new and original varieties in line with market needs.
• Sets up, coordinates and administers independent breeding program based on defined company objectives.
• Executes breeding objectives within a defined resource scope.
• Undertake objective phenotyping of genetic material placed in the different targeted markets and analyze results using statistical tools.
•  Ensure the provision of uniform and stable basic seed.
• Remain abreast of pertinent scientific and technological developments and introduces innovation to breeding program where appropriate.
• Visit his/her breeding programs in other locations/ countries.

Required skills: 

Functional
-  Working knowledge and a competent grasp of the methodology, science and art of plant breeding and supporting disciplines.
-  Advanced knowledge of assigned species in botany, biology, genetics, horticulture, germplasm, and biometrics.
-  Advanced knowledge of the major biotic and abiotic diseases or disorders of the species, and is familiar with seed production issues for assigned species.
-  Solid understanding of the new product development process in the company. Solid understanding of the required traits for target and secondary markets. Demonstrated ability to deliver commercial varieties.

Strategic Planning and Analysis
-  Ability to manage multiple projects, with the end result in mind.
Have a good capacity for analysis and attention to detail with the ability to detect subtle differences between plants.
-  Ability to design a breeding scheme based on multiple and complex information sources.
-  Ability to bring new ideas to the table and make proposals.

Technical Skills
-  Experience with collecting and analyzing experimental data; genetic statistics and experimental design.
-  Ability to use operational IT Breeding system, Microsoft products such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
-  Ability to effectively utilize breeding databases and analytics software.
-  Experience with field and greenhouse work.
-  Capacity to lead a professional team to attain objectives.
-  Good project management skills needed.

Education: 

Master´s degree in Agriculture or Biology/Biotechnology
