THE MISSION:

► As Oilseed Rape (OSR) Program Manager you will develop, direct, implement and control the short-, mid- and long-term research breeding strategy and activities for the Western European OSR program. ► As a manager, you will lead a team of breeders and technicians located in Verneuil station and collaborate with your pears to ensure smooth coordination in allocation of resources, use of buildings and equipment.
► You will also be responsible to prepare and follow budgets and investments for the OSR breeding program in France.

- Provide AI expertise: Act as an Expert in AI. Provide recommendations/advice on the methods and neural network architecture to be used according to the problems encountered. Raise awareness of the LFS scientific community on AI-related issues and promote them.
- Carry out a scientific and technical watch in AI: Maintain a bibliography on the subject. Participation in scientific conferences/seminars. Identify potential collaborations with academic or industrial actors.

Skills we are looking for:
- PhD in Artificial Intelligence or equivalent. The candidate must have a first significant experience (2 years minimum) in the development and implementation of AI methods for industrial or academic applications, ideally in plant or animal breeding.

- Proficiency in Python, R or other programming languages commonly used in AI.

LE CONTEXTE:
La sélection maïs moderne s’est organisée en créant des hybrides entre lignées sélectionnées dans des groupes génétiques complémentaires (groupes hétérotiques), créés à partir d’un matériel initial très divers et peu différencié. Cette séparation en groupes complémentaires permet la production d’hybrides inter-groupes qui valorisent le phénomène d’hétérosis (avantage de l’hybride par rapport à ses parents), important chez le maïs. Les deux principaux groupes au niveau mondial et en France sont les « stiff-stalk » et « non stiff-stalk » (Cooper et al. 2014, Coffman et al. 2019, Reif et al. 2005). Le groupe Iodent s’est individualisé plus tard au sein des non « Stiff Stalk ». Néanmoins, du fait de l’historique de sélection, des transferts de fragments génétiques entre ces groupes hétérotiques ont pu se produire.
Les données disponibles aujourd’hui, issues de la recherche publique et des données de sélection interne Limagrain permettent de mieux comprendre le niveau exact de séparation des groupes génétiques et d’évaluer quels en sont les enjeux au niveau de l’hétérosis.
LES MISSIONS:
Le projet est organisé avec une année au sein du Centre de Recherche de Limagrain puis 2 années à Saclay en région parisienne dans une équipe INRAE avec le plan de travail suivant :
1) Etude de l'évolution de la diversité au sein des pools Stiff Stalk et Non Stiff Stalk de Limagrain, à partir de données interne Limagrain et de méthodes déjà disponibles
2) Etude de l'effet de la consanguinité résiduelle des hybrides intergroupes sur la performance et l'ASC.
Exploitation des résultats du 1) avec des données expérimentales générées par les programmes de sélection de Limagrain.
3) Déterminants de l'hétérosis
Localisation de régions significativement associés à l'hétérosis
En d’autres termes, il s’agit de :
- identifier des indicateurs de séparation / « pureté » des groupes génétiques, en fonction de la proportion du génome ou de fragments spécifiques propres à chaque groupe hétérotique
- évaluer l’impact d’un « manque » de séparation des groupes génétiques sur la performance des hybrides. Il s’agira d’évaluer l’impact des fragments communs entre groupes hétérotiques, pour le prendre en compte dans le processus de sélection des lignées et des hybrides
- comprendre les composantes de l’hétérosis mises en jeu et proposer une stratégie de validation et de valorisation des résultats dans un programme de sélection
Dans ce contexte vous serez amené à collaborer avec des équipes réparties dans de nombreux pays. Vous participerez pleinement à l'émulation scientifique au sein du groupe Limagrain en général et de la branche grandes cultures en particulier. Vous serez intégré à l’équipe support scientifique sélection maïs et bénéficierez d’un environnement scientifique stimulant et d’accès aux ressources de l’entreprise (expertise, algorithmes, capacité de calcul).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Vous êtes issu d'une formation de niveau Master ou équivalent en Statistiques, Génétique Quantitative, Sélection Animale ou Végétale.
Vous êtes familier avec le traitement de données de grandes dimensions, des langages et outils scientifiques (écosystème R indispensable).
Créatif et innovant, rigoureux et organisé, vous avez la capacité de gérer des projets de recherche de la conception à la conclusion, incluant l'organisation et la planification des opérations, mener les analyses statistiques, interprétation des résultats de recherche et partage des conclusions.

- Deliver hybrids for your market segment to product development team.
- Implement the breeding strategy and manage the hybrid breeding project
- Decide on crossing plan to produce “pre-application” hybrids.
- Maintain a high level of trial quality and ensure continuous improvements.
- Manage and take charge of the assessment of hybrids, visit and score trials and nurseries
- Develop and maintain expert knowledge of germplasm to understand the usefulness of lines and hybrids across environments
- Develop and follow germplasm exchange programs with third parties.
- Analyze all data with appropriate tools and take breeding decisions.
- Optimize breeding strategy by fully integrating novel technologies available

PEOPLE MANAGEMENT:
- Manage testing teams in Nérac and Colmar
- Mentor, coach and develop your team
- Promote innovation and maintain high technical and scientific level of his / her team.
- Play a key role in the management of the relevant stations: facilitate coordination with other teams, resources organization and resources sharing.
- Ensure that all team members follow the company standards (health, safety and environment and other).
- Develop a strong relationship with the product development team and the local business.
- Develop close relationship with Maize breeders operating in other programs or other territories as well as other key partners of the Limagrain Field Seed Research organization

FINANCE:
- Propose and follow budgets and investments for your perimeter and appropriately justify any deviations.

You have a PhD or Master's Degree in Plant Breeding and Genetics, or in a similar field and at least 10 years of experience in a similar position (Maize Breeder or other hybrid species in a commercial program).
You have specific knowledge in plant breeding, genetics, and agronomy; you are familiar with the seed industry. Knowledge of the target region and associated biotic and abiotic stresses and germplasm would be appreciated.
Skills in using software to analyze and manage data, present results and reporting are required.
Strong interpersonal, organizational, analytical skills are also necessary to ensure your success. You have strong communication, influencing and leadership skills and experience in team management and project management.
Finally, your English and French must be fluent.

- Define the short-, medium- and long-term objectives of the hybridization project and the target portfolio with development and marketing teams.
